Spanaway, Washington is a small town (“census-designated place,” officially) with a population of 27,227 that is near Parkland and about 14 miles south of Tacoma. Just because you haven’t heard of this idyllic place doesn’t mean that others haven’t—Spanaway is a song (by The Movielife), an album title (from Seaweed), and is mentioned in another song (Neko Case’s “The Needle Has Landed”). Now don’t you wish you lived here?
If you think that small towns don’t see a lot of action, you may be surprised to learn that in 1951 Lieutenant John W. Hodgkin flew his Piper J-3 Cub aircraft from Spanaway Air Strip to the top of Mt. Rainier and was immediately taken to task by the federal court for landing in a national park.

Check out Painting Event with a Glass of Wine in nearby Sumner where, true to its name, you will have loads of fun learning to paint while sipping a glass (or three) of wine. Get scared out of your pants on a 90-minute guided tour at the Downtown Tacoma Ghost Tour. Or revisit your youth (or your parents’ youth) at Rollin’ 253 Skate Center where you’ll roller skate to some classic ‘80s music.
