If you haven’t heard of Hyattsville, Maryland, you’re not alone. Even the 17,557 residents of this “close, urban suburb of Washington, D.C.” haven’t. But that doesn’t stop them from enjoying the small town with the tree-lined streets! Between the cute Sears bungalow homes (seriously, people used to order their houses from the Sears catalogue), the humid subtropical climate (hot summer, cold winter), and the proximity to government activities (just 7 miles to the White House), Hyattsville is a great place to live.
With 21 religious institutions in the area, there is one place of worship for every 836 residents. And during exam time at the nearby University of Maryland, most of the church/synagogue/mosque attendees are probably students. A great place to relax at the end of a long week is the Mall at Prince Georges, with endless options to indulge in a little shopping, dining or drinking.

If retail therapy is not your thing, wander over to the Gateway Arts District in downtown Hyattsville to enjoy the Busboys and Poets restaurant, admire the sculptures, mosaics, and other public art, or stroll around one of six parks like the Robert J. King Memorial Park. Outside of the Arts District you will find several more parks, as well as the Riverside House Museum where you can take a guided tour.
Hyattsville is the birthplace to Muppet creator Jim Henson, and while you can’t visit his old house, there are plenty of historic sites around town that you can visit, such as Hitching Post Hill, Hyattsville Armory, and the Hyattsville Post Office. While you’re there, be sure to send a postcard to all your friends saying “Wish you were here!”
