In September 2023, a StoreQuest self-storage facility in Thousand Oaks, California, became the target of a sophisticated burglary amid a rising wave of self-storage thefts in the area. Thieves gained after-hours access by calling the company's customer service line and obtaining an emergency code. Once inside, they used a ladder to reach the top of the targeted unit, cut through the chicken-wire roof, and dropped in to steal multiple guitar cases containing high-end instruments valued at an estimated $50,000. This incident was part of a broader pattern where robbers exploited vulnerabilities in storage facilities, prying open doors and escaping with thousands in valuables. Police identified at least three victims in related break-ins at the same site.
