In November 2023, police in Brampton and Mississauga, Ontario, uncovered a major theft ring involving stolen liquor stored in self-storage units. Investigators had been tracking the illegal sale of contraband alcohol to businesses and individuals since the previous November. The liquor, believed to have originated in China and intended for California, included high-end brands like Absolut, Bacardi, and Ballantines. During raids on three facilities—Safe Self Storage and Public Storage in Brampton, and Yellow Self Storage in Mississauga—authorities recovered 2,500 cases of the stolen merchandise, valued at approximately $800,000.
